It threatened to rain all day. Somehow, every single time we needed to be outside with a camera, it let up. That was the running theme of Tess and Grant’s August wedding at Discovery World in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and it meant they still got Lake Michigan and the downtown skyline the way they had always pictured it.
Their ceremony was supposed to happen outside on the lawn. It didn’t, and it hardly mattered. The Pavilion at Discovery World is glass on every side, so you feel like you are standing at the edge of the water whether you are inside or out. They had 230 of their absolute favorite people in that room, and not one of them seemed bothered by the forecast. There was an unhurried joy to the whole group all day. Everyone was just there to watch these two get married.
Tess and Grant met online, had their first date at Central Standard in April 2022, and got engaged on that same rooftop in December 2024. They are hikers, travelers, Wisconsin sports people, and proud dog parents to Jet, who made his own appearance on the cocktail napkins at the bar.

The morning started calm. Tess got ready with her bridesmaids, and when we walked in they were mid game of mafia. That group could entertain themselves all day. We knew right then the energy of this wedding was going to be epic.
Grant and his groomsmen got ready a few floors away, and from there everyone traveled over to Discovery World for the first look. The rain let up right on cue. They saw each other for the first time with Lake Michigan behind them and the Milwaukee skyline off in the distance.
Tess had joked ahead of time that she wanted to see a tear out of Grant. Then they read their private vows to each other and she got exactly one, which felt like it was saved up just for her. (Yay, Grant!) 🙂

What stood out to us most was how easily these two rolled with every change to the plan. The weather kept moving, the timeline shifted with it, and Tess and Grant were happy with all of it. All smiles, go with the flow, ready to be married.
They spent cocktail hour with their friends, and we slipped out with just the two of them for a stretch of early portraits before the rain came back in. Wind off the lake, the Art Museum and the skyline behind them, no one else around.
The speeches were genuinely great. So was the first dance, which included a running twirl that we did not see coming and are still thinking about. Instead of a cake cutting, they toasted with Dirty Shirleys, their drink for the night. And at the end of the night, they both changed into custom Converse, which we’re officially obsessed with.

You two never once let the rain get a vote. You were relaxed, you were laughing, and your people took the cue from you all night. Thank you for letting us spend the day with you on the lake. We loved every bit of it, especially that twirl.

Discovery World sits right on the lakefront in downtown Milwaukee, and the Pavilion is one of the best rain plans in the city. The wall of windows means the light changes all day and Lake Michigan stays in frame no matter what the sky is doing. For a real wedding at Discovery World, you get a lawn when the weather cooperates, a glass room when it doesn’t, and the rocks and skyline just outside for portraits either way. If you want Milwaukee itself in your wedding photos, this venue does the work.
Is Discovery World a good venue for a wedding? Yes, it’s one of the best. As a Milwaukee wedding photographer who has shot in the Pavilion, the wall of windows and lakefront setting give a ceremony space that photographs beautifully in almost any light, and the walk out to the rocks along Lake Michigan puts skyline and Art Museum backdrops just steps from the reception.
Can you have an outdoor ceremony at Discovery World? Discovery World offers both outdoor and indoor ceremony options, and many couples choose the Pavilion for its floor to ceiling lake views even when they want the comfort and predictability of an indoor setting. Either way, you’re getting Lake Michigan as your backdrop.
Where can you take wedding photos in Milwaukee near Discovery World? The lakefront rocks and pier just outside Discovery World are some of our favorite spots in the city, with the Milwaukee Art Museum and downtown skyline both visible within a short walk. It’s an easy way to get skyline, water, and architecture into one gallery without leaving the venue’s neighborhood.
